Pizza Express
The Story
Pizza Express was founded in London in 1965 by Peter Boizot, who imported a pizza oven from Italy and opened on Wardour Street at a time when pizza was still a novelty in Britain. The chain expanded steadily over the following decades and is now one of the most widely recognised Italian restaurant brands in the country.
The Shrewsbury branch occupies a spot at 55 Mardol, one of the older streets in the town, running from the edge of The Square down toward the Welsh Bridge. The building sits among independent shops and the branch follows the standard Pizza Express format: an open kitchen, simple wooden furniture and the familiar red and white branding. It is a straightforward operation in a good position, and for a town of Shrewsbury's size it sees consistent trade throughout the week.
Pizza Express works because the formula is consistent and the Shrewsbury branch executes it well. The dough balls are a ritual for a reason. We recommend it when you want a reliable Italian meal in a central location without having to think too hard about the booking.
Enjoy Your Visit
The restaurant is at 55 Mardol, a two-minute walk from The Square. Raven Meadows car park is about eight minutes on foot. If you are arriving by train, Shrewsbury station is a twelve-minute walk through the town centre along Castle Street and Pride Hill.
Mardol leads down toward the Welsh Bridge and the River Severn, a short stroll from the restaurant. The riverside walk from the Welsh Bridge across to the English Bridge takes about fifteen minutes and makes a good way to stretch your legs before sitting down to eat.
The dough balls with garlic butter are the standard opening move. The classic pizzas — American Hot, Sloppy Giuseppe, La Reine — are the dishes the chain built its name on. Romana bases are thinner and wider if you want something lighter. The set lunch menu is good value on weekdays.
Reservations can be made online and the branch gets busy on Friday and Saturday evenings, so booking ahead is worth doing. A children's menu is available throughout. The restaurant is fully accessible at ground level.
