The Story
The Grapes was a public house on the Welshpool Road at Bicton Heath, on the western edge of Shrewsbury. When Ego took on the building, the format fitted well: a Mediterranean kitchen with a wood-fired oven, a long bar, a relaxed dining room and the kind of menu that suits a converted pub better than a cramped town centre room would.
Bicton Heath sits about two miles west of Shrewsbury centre on the A458. It is not a destination neighbourhood, which means the restaurant earns its customers through the food rather than the postcode. The building has considerably more space than most town centre restaurants, which makes it particularly well suited to groups and families who want to spread out and take their time.
Ego at The Grapes is a reliable drive-out restaurant in a town that does not have many of them. The wood-fired pizzas are properly done and the Mediterranean menu covers enough ground that every table finds something worth coming back for. We go here when we want to eat well without thinking too hard about where to book.

Bicton Heath is on the Welshpool Road (A458), about two miles west of Shrewsbury town centre. By car it is a ten-minute drive from The Square. There is a car park directly outside the restaurant. Bus route 64 from the town centre stops on the Welshpool Road a short walk from the door.
The wood-fired pizzas are the most consistently praised dishes on the menu — the dough is made fresh and the portions are generous. Mediterranean sharing plates make a good way to start. The pasta dishes are reliable and well-portioned for the price.
A set lunch menu is available on weekdays and represents good value for the quality. The restaurant is family-friendly throughout. Dogs are welcome in certain areas. The room is large enough that groups and families do not feel squeezed in the way they might in a smaller town centre restaurant.
The drive back into Shrewsbury takes ten minutes. If you want to walk off lunch before heading home, the Quarry Park is fifteen minutes from the Welsh Bridge on foot — 29 acres of riverside parkland at the heart of the old town, free to enter.
